Dr Saboor’s ‘murderers’ arrested
LAHORE: The Model Town Division police has investigated the murder of Sheikh Zayed Hospital former administrator Dr Abdul Saboor, with the accused members of banned religious organisation Harkatul Mujahideen claiming they killed him due to his affiliation with the Ahmadiyyah community. Previously, on January 16, three unidentified men killed Dr Saboor in Model Town while he was travelling in his car. According to the first information report, the killers were aged between 25 years and 30 years. Model Town Investigation In-charge Rana Farman said the capital police arrested three people, who had been accused of Dr Saboor’s murder, and they claimed to be members of the banned organisation. The arrested were identified as Major (r) Haroon, Waheed Rasheed and Nawaz. Police alleged the accused were the main members of the banned organisation. The accused had been arrested from Nawaz’s residence in Islamabad. The accused said they planned to abduct the doctor and murder him after receiving a handsome ransom, but failure to abduct him had led to a direct murder. They alleged he belonged to the Ahmadiyya community, which sparked his enmity with them. Meanwhile, Tahmina Saboor, wife of Dr Saboor, said the doctor was a Sunni Muslim and had no contact with the said community. Model Town investigation team’s member said he was sure of involvement of the accused in Dr Saboor’s murder. However, he denied Dr Saboor’s affiliation with the Ahmadiyya community, saying the accused were lying to cover up their crime. He said the accused were important members of the Harkatul Mujahiddin, and were responsible for abducting people for ransom, which funded the organisation. adnan lodhi
